150 Mayan pieces to be exhibited at Musée du quai Branly

Paris, 21 April 2011

The Musée du quai Branly will continue its tradition of innovation when it exhibits a collection that has never before left Guatemala, its country of origin.

The proud exhibition curators are Juan-Carlos Melendez and Richard Hansen. Melendez is the director of the National Museum of Archeology and Ethnology in Guatemala City and Hansen is an archeologist. The museum will be hosting the exhibition from June 2011.

The Maya, Aztec and Inca cultures are some of the oldest civilizations of our time. The reason why the collection has never left Guatemala is simple: the relics were recently discovered, mostly at the archeological site El Mirador. The site could soon be on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

While the exhibition is only a preview of what is still to come, it has been conceived to educate the public and to illustrate the cultural wealth of this civilization. “Maya au quai Branly” will be running from 21 June to 2 October 2011.
