Lowe Art Museum displaying Japanese Art of the Edo and Meiji Periods

Miami, 31 July 2012

Up until 21 October, the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum will be displaying “Introspection and Awakening: Japanese Art of the Edo and Meiji Periods, 1615-1912”.

Featuring over two hundred paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics and lacquer objects from the museum’s permanent collection, this exhibition recounts the development of the art forms of painting, pottery, and woodblock printing taught in the various official and popular schools which existed from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries.

As stated in the press release, the exhibition will address the following themes: “the influence of China and Korea on Japan during this crucial time frame; the role of the artist and pupil, and their close association with other artists and patrons; the Japanese life style and belief structure; and the impact of West on East”.
