The Doris Wiener collection sold in New York

New York, 19 March 2012

As part of its Asian art week, which will run from 20 to 23 March 2012, Christie’s will put up for sale more than 400 lots from the Doris Wiener collection.

The gallery owner Doris Wiener, who died in April 2011, was a specialist in Asian arts. Igor Stravinsky and Jacquline Kennedy figured among her customers. She had also given numerous works in her collection, notably to the Museum of Art in New York, not far from her own gallery, or to the Cleveland Museum of Art (Ohio).

The lot to watch at the auction is an ensemble of statues depicting Shiva, Uma and Skanda, three Hindu deities.

It will also feature paintings from Gandhara (North-West of Pakistan), the Himalayas, India, and South-East Asia. Pieces include a sculpture of the Buddha (valued between $ 250,000 and $ 350,000), a thangka, a Tibetan painting from the 16th century (valued between $ 150,000 and $ 250,000), a statuette of the Buddha from the north of India, from the Pala period, made during the 10th century (valued between $ 70,000 and $ 90,000).
