Christie’s has recently announced its New York spring sales’ schedule, with its higlight being the Asian Art Week. Eight sales mark this event held from 19 to 22 March 2013.
The week starts with Indian and South Asian art sales offering 200 lots including sculptures, paintings, ritual objects and art objects issued from India, Nepal, Tibet and South-East Asia. Among the objects we might mention a gold covered Tibetan bronze depicting bodhisattva, a bronze Buddha from Gandahar dated from the 6th/7th century and a Chola bronze sculpture from the south of India.
The Heidi and Helmut Neumann collection devoted to ancient Tibetan paintings and masterpieces will be held on the same day. The two connoisseurs have been gathering such significant examples of 13th and 14th-century Tibetan paintings since the beginning of the 1960s. The majority of the works put on sale are abundantly documented since these works were objects of numerous public exhibitions and publications.
The Modern and Contemporary South-Asian art sale will take place on 20 March, including emerging and renowned artists, such as Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, Maqbool Fida Husain, Tyeb Mehta, Jagdish Swaminathan, Syed Haider Raza, Subodh Gupta, Rina Banerjee, Atul Dodiya, Bharti Kher, Ravinder Reddy and Tayeba Begum Lipi – a rising star from Bangladesh. Another sale held on 20 March will be devoted to classic Japanese and Korean art offering 290 lots, including porcelain, calligraphy, prints, armours, screens, bronzes and furniture.
The 21 March auction will honour China. Christie’s will put on sale a collection of stonecutter art Lizzadro, which consists of exceptional Chinese jade pieces. Another sale dedicated to China will include Huanghuali furniture issued from private American collections. An important session showcasing ceramic and Chinese art objects, encompassing all history periods, is scheduled for 21 and 22 March. The last session will offer objects from the Hildegard Schonfeld collection, including refined Chinese snuff bottles made with jade, agate, glass or porcelain.
