Three world records for African and Oceanic art at Christie’s

11 June 2012 saw three new world records set at a sale at Christie’s. The sale of rare African and Oceanic art works met a huge success.

The three world records recorded during the auction sale:

-Lot 11: Kota-Shamaye reliquary figure auctioned at €211,000, a new record for a Shamanic item. -Lot 117: Umete Marquesan ceremonial bowl, sold for €67,000, another world record for a Marquesan ceremonial plate. -Lot 120: Unique Pahu Marquesan drum, at the centre of an auction battle before going for €250,000, a new record.

Let’s not forget other great works from the auction sale:

-Lot 53: Yoruba horse and rider from Nigeria, sold for €493,000 (twice its estimation) -Lot 79: Nkonde nail figure from Democratic Republic of the Congo, sold for €373,000 (three times its estimation) -Lots 112 & 124: Pair of Marquesan ear ornaments (sold for €5,625) and Too Genealogical Instrument (sold for €73,000) (Quai Branly Museum pre-emptions)
