Doris Weiner Collection at Christie’s

On 20 March, Christie’s will disperse the Asian and Indian art collection of the famous gallery owner Doris Weiner who died in April 2011. By discovering Asia in the early 60s, Doris Weiner was one of the major figures in the art market of Southeast Asia for over forty years. Doris Weiner Gallery’s clients include John D. Rockefeller III, Igor Stravinksy, Jacqueline Kennedy and renowned institutions such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, Norton Simon Museum of Art, Asia Society and Brooklyn Museum.

The sale organised by Christie’s will reflect the collector’s taste of exquisite art, including a bronze centrepiece by Somaskanda, dating back to the 11th century and estimated between $800,000 and $1.2 million. A Nepalese gilt bronze statue bearing the likeness of Padmapani, dating from the 14th century should also attract attention (estimated $250,000-350,000), and an early 12th statue of Avalokiteshvara (estimated between $250,000-350,000). A 9th century Khmersand stone sculpture of a standing Buddha, should also attract the attention of buyers with an estimation of $250,000-50,000. Tibetan painting will also be honoured, including two 14th century thangka representing Hevajra mandalas, both estimated between $150,000-250,000.
